Smart Cars, Not E-Cares are “real gamechanger,’ Said Volkswagen CEO
German carmaker Volkswagen CEO Herbert Diess said that autonomous cars, not electric vehicles, will be the “real gamechanger” for the auto industry.
Recently he talks to members of Greenpeace ahead of the Munich Motor Show. Diess’ comments indicate that they are now interested to transform Europe’s largest car market. However, the shift towards battery-powered electric vehicles (EV) still needs to be backed up by actual sales.
Ahead of the official opening of the IAA car show, Diess said, “Autonomous driving is going to change our industry like nothing else before. The real gamechanger is software and autonomous driving.” He also mentioned that the shift towards electrified cars was “kind of easy” in comparison.
Diess shared this statement when environmental pressure on the auto sector is ramping up. European Commission is going to impose an effective ban on the sale of new petrol and diesel cars from 2035. German environmental NGO Deutsche Umwelthilfe (DUH) and Greenpeace are trying to take legal action against German carmakers.
