TheCitizen Lab is working to track electronic surveillance for years. They warned the UK government that networks belonging to both 10 Downing Street and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office were infected using Pegasus spyware in 2020 and 2021. Pegasus is sold by NSO Group to governments to perform surveillance of infecting phones with malicious software. It allowed governments to take control of people’s phones, and extract data so that they can accomplish the surveillance without any restrictions.

However, the NSO group always denied any misuse of data. It said that it is only sold to the selected government organizations for law enforcement and intelligence purposes. It has been used to protect any criminal activities and to identify terrorists.

An NSO Group spokesperson said, “The information raised regarding these allegations are, yet again, false and could not be related to NSO products for technological and contractual reasons.” It also stated, “NSO continues to be targeted by a number of politically motivated advocacy organizations, like Citizens Labs and Amnesty, to produce inaccurate and unsubstantiated reports based on vague and incomplete information. We have repeatedly co-operated with governmental investigations, where credible allegations merit.”
