A prototype TV screen has been developed in Japan that can mimic food flavors. This “lickable” screen can be used to train cooks or sommeliers remotely. It seems a world of downloadable “taste content” is going to be started.
Professor Homei Miyashita of Meiji University discussed with manufacturers about the commercial production of the screen. He has estimated that the TV would cost $875. The professor also said that other possible applications of the flavor-spraying technology like adding flavors to toast should be considered.
The professor mentioned, “The goal is to make it possible for people to have the experience of something like eating at a restaurant on the other side of the world, even while staying at home.”
Earlier prof Miyashita and his students have produced some extraordinary devices related to taste. They invented a fork that can make food tastier. However, many people have criticized the initiative during this ongoing pandemic. One person on Twitter commented, “Very likely to make a breakthrough in times of corona :)” But Prof Miyashita said, “In the era of Covid-19, this kind of technology could enhance the way people connect with the outside world.”
