Celebrity status usually means owning a mansion or two with about twenty or so useless rooms attached to it but there are a few well-known names who don’t believe in such extravagant luxuries, one being Kansas City quarterback, Patrick Mahomes.

The 25-year-old has a cushy paycheck and holds one of the most lucrative contracts in American sports history yet he and his longtime girlfriend, Brittany Matthews, live in an understated contemporary ranch in Kansas City, Missouri. Come along with us as Patrick gives us a tour of his home and you will be left surprised but in the best way possible.

The Basics

Mahomes purchased the house in 2019 for around $1.75 million to $1.9 million, almost exactly one year before he led the Chiefs to victory in the 2020 Super Bowl. The house is 4,343 square feet with three bedrooms and two-and-half bathrooms and it sits on a 1.4-acre lot by the Country Club District.

Constructed in 1953, the house has mid-century bones which include an open floor plan with floor-to-ceiling windows. While not much of the original work stands today,  the main living room still has a 1950s’ Art Deco fireplace that looks like something straight out of Mad Men.

Making It Their Own

According to property records, about $400,000 has been poured into updating the nearly 70-year-old house, and we know Mahomes and Matthews did the renovations and as you go further into the article, you will know that it was money well-spent.

Listing records say the home has only been sold twice in the last 18 years, and that includes the sale to Mahomes. “It’s cool just to have our own house where we can grow into, and so this is definitely a big step in our life,” Mahomes told Bleacher Report.

Renting Before

“Renting a house wasn’t for us. We wanted our own place.” He continued
“Just being able to nail stuff into the wall and not have to get, like, the sticky tabs — like, you can do whatever you want with the home now,” Mahomes told Bleacher Report.

Why did Mahomes pick this house? Well, location, location and location. His ranch is a short drive away to the Mission Hills Country Club and about nine miles away from Arrowhead Stadium, where the Chiefs practise and host their home games.

Still A Small Town Boy

Despite all his fame and wealth, Mahomes has still stayed close to his roots. Born in Tyler, Texas, he attended Whitehouse High School in the small city of Whitehouse, Texas. In tenth grade, he met Matthews.

The couple started dating in High School and remained together ever since. Patrick on Sept. 9, 2020, at Arrowhead Stadium, buying Mathew an 8- to 10-carat emerald-cut diamond ring planted on a diamond-encrusted band. And the ring is as impressive as it sounds with a rumoured price tag between $350,000 and $800,000.

Making History

Mahomes doesn’t ever have to worry about money though since he is the holder of a 10-year, $503 million contracts which is the largest contract in NFL history. It’s also the second-largest contract in the history of sports.

USAToday

Only soccer legend Lionel Messi has a bigger one, who signed a $673.9 million deal with FC Barcelona in 2017. With such an impressive paycheck, you would think Patrick would have a slew of mansions yet he decided to go a very different route.

Humble To His Core

Mahomes last home wasn’t even home, he and his girlfriend were living in an upstairs guest bedroom in Matthews’ father’s house to save some money. It was only when they announced that they were pregnant with a baby girl did the couple decide to move.

This is just one of the many reasons why the Mahomes is loved by millions of sports fans around the world and his home reflects his humble approach to life which is such a drastic change from other celebrities.

Original Features

During the renovations, the couple decided to keep the open floor plan and original windows and cabinetry. We aren’t certain if the orange-tones wood grain is original to the house but feels very 1950s to us.

We also love the placement of the wet bar, which is in the living room and hiding behind a set of double doors is built-in storage up the wazoo and large flat-screen television. We love that the couple decided to not make their television the focal point of the room.

Dog-Friendly Home

The couple has two dogs — a pitbull named Steel (left) and a Cane Corso named Silver.
Interestingly, Mahomes used to be afraid of dogs. “Until I was in high school,” Mahomes told The Kansas City Star. “Then I went straight to a pit bull.”

It looks like the couple kept the fireplace poker set stationed by the hearth, although they opted to put a dog kennel in the corner where a chest once stood. They also chose furnishings that were dog-friendly and could take a beating or two!

Corner Office

Rather than dedicate a formal space to the office, which let’s be honest never gets used, Mahomes put a simple modern desk in his living room. It seems like the quarterback puts more focus on functionality rather than looks inside his home which is a breath of fresh air.

And we weren’t kidding when we said the couple had made everything dog-friendly. It looks like Silver has taken over the workplace and is set to help Patrick out paying the bills or at least, chewing the computer wires!

 A Slice Of Luxury

“We renovated a lot of the house. The last thing was the shoe room,” Mahomes told Bleacher Report. “That has been something that I’ve been wanting for the last six, seven years at least.”

Bleacher Report/YouTube

The new shoe room seems to the most over-the-top aspect of the house and includes shelving that is individually lit up with LED lights and holds at least 180 pairs of shoes. Once all the shelves are full, Mahomes has said he will stop collecting sneakers.

His Favourite Kicks

“When you don’t have enough room, I feel like you lose the value of some of your shoes,” Mahomes said. “Some of the shoes that you’ve worn once, you forget about cuz you don’t see ’em.”

“These right here, these are my babies,” Mahomes told Bleacher Report, pulling a pair of Yeezy Triple Black 750s from a lighted shelf. These Adidas shoes were made in conjunction with Kanye West and sell for an average of $1,100, according to Stock X data.

No Sharing

While an overall likeable guy, there is one thing you should never ask Mahome and that is to borrow one of his sneakers, especially his brother, Jackson Mahomes. We have to say, this little fact about Mahome makes him even more endearing.

Bleacher Report/YouTube

He went on to say that he even added a camera in his closet, in case his brother decided to come and take a pair anyway! “That way I can look and make sure all my shoes are still here,” he said.

Bathroom Tour

One of the bathrooms inside the home features a bold and unexpected colour hue which feels very at-home in the mid-century home. We particularly love the wood beam which also acts as an overhead light.

Staying true to the monochromatic tone, the bathroom features a graphic poster. The use of understated accessories is the key to ensuring that the space stayed focused rather than overwhelming.

Home Gym

When you are an athlete, it is a no-brainer to add a gym to your home. Mahomes is rather small yet still has all the necessities plus a few fun types of equipment. The gym isn’t original to the house and was added by the quarterback.

Brittanylynn/Instagram

We spot a Peloton bike, which is a celebrity favourite and a must in the current pandemic! Brittany also uses the use as much as her more famous partner. She has her own fitness company, Brittany Lynne Fitness, which provides online training and fitness classes.

Screened-In Porch

When the couple isn’t sweating in their home gym, they can be found hanging out inside the fully screened-in porch, which has plenty of ceiling fans. Both of these things are a must in the hot Kansas City summer months.

The casual hangout spot also has bar seating, so the couple can enjoy their morning coffee looking out at the expansive backyard or cosy up on the couch. We particularly love the use of the soft neutrals throughout with the pop of colour through the pillows.

Bedroom and Bathroom

While Mahome has kept things low-key, apart from the shoe room his bedroom is also another exception. The owner’s suite is the size of an entire house at 1,250 square feet when including the laundry, closet, bathroom and exercise room.

Again, the couple used neutrals in their bedroom, complementing the rest of the house with the focal point being the fireplace and the two matching printed armchairs next to it. We also love that, Mahome had a  urinal installed in their bathroom, inspired by the one Shaq has one is his home.

Outside Seating

With wonderful weather in Kansas City, the home features various outdoor seating options. From courtyard leading out of bedrooms to a communal seating area which is made for hosting parties.

The yard is also divided into levels, giving the whole space a dynamic look while the mature trees provide the space with much-needed privacy throughout the year. The landscaping is carefully picked with only trees, bushes and flowers added which will look great throughout every season.

The Pool

Like we mentioned above, Kansas City gets hot and with two dogs and a growing family, a pool is a must. The property features a long rectangle pool which is surrounded by lush greenery and lounge space.

steel_silver_mahomes/Instagram

The athletic couple uses their pool more than most and even added a basketball hoop for “casual” games during their frequent pool days. And it’s not just them that enjoys the cool aqua blue water, their four-legged kids also seem to love it!

Manicured Yard

Matthews says the home’s spacious yard is probably the “biggest thing for us” because the dogs have room to play. Apart from the large pool, the yard also has a hot tub, along with large patios and a rose garden.

realtor.com

The couple doesn’t plan on adding any elaborate yard sculptures or details and prefer to keep the outdoors, simple and unfussy. Plus, they love the expansive yard space which is a must for any dog-owner.

Here To Stay

The soon-to-be-married couple says they expect to be living in Kansas City for a very long time. “Twenty years-plus,” Mahomes said. Despite his home being one of the most expensive in the area, we doubt that Mahomes ever has to worry about the mortgage payment.

realtor.com

How expensive is it? Well, according to realtor.com, the luxurious house is 765 per cent more expensive than nearby but in the grand scheme of things, $1.99 million is nothing to the established athlete.
