In an attempt to tidy up internet content, China has resolved to blocking apps related to pornography, violence, gambling and prostitution. What’s confusing, though, is that they also blocked US travel app TripAdvisor.

The Cyber Administration of China claims it had deleted 105 apps that were thought to be illegal or violating cyber-laws. One of the apps affected is TripAdvisor, a US travel app that also shows reviews of hotels, restaurants, and tourist destinations, which the administration claims has violated three cyber-laws but has not provided further information. The apps removed are first of the few that would be removed in accordance with the cleanup.

This news followed a second US court ruling against a proposed ban on the popular Chinese app, Tiktok. In the summer, President Trump announced a ban on the app. Chinese authorities claim this decision was a bullying tactic and would do everything they can to protect Chinese companies’ interests. US district judge Carl Nichols is the second judge to rule in favour of the app, saying President Trump is overstepping his authority in wanting to ban Tiktok. In the past few months, tension has been increasing between the two countries in cyberspace.

For years, Chinese users have been subjected to a censorship system more commonly known as The Great Firewall. The internet in China continues to be heavily censored and regulated. Some notable apps banned in the country include Facebook, Twitter, and Google.
