Mr. Adams explained his feelings and expectations on social media. He exposed that he intends to make New York the “center of the cryptocurrency industry”. Previously the mayor of Miami Francis Suarez also said in his own Twitter message that he would like to take his first paycheck in bitcoin when he was re-elected. Mr. Suarez also expressed his expectation to establish Miami as a hub for cryptocurrency innovation.
The world’s largest cryptocurrency bitcoin was created in 2009. Since then, the value of bitcoin has been highly volatile. Mr. Adams wrote in his Twitter post, “In New York, we always go big, so I’m going to take my first three paychecks in bitcoin when I become mayor.” Mr. Adams also wrote, “NYC is going to be the center of the cryptocurrency industry and other fast-growing, innovative industries! Just wait!”
However, cryptocurrency has been heavily criticized in the past due to its environmental impact. New York Attorney General Letitia James launched a crackdown on unregistered cryptocurrency companies.
